 Beste, Ons geliefde huis staat in brand. Wereldwijd falen regeringen in het beheersen van die brand. De wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen moet binnen zes jaar worden gehalveerd om onder de twee graden opwarming te blijven. Twee graden opwarming werd in Parijs in 2015 tot ‘nog niet-catastrofaal’ bepaald, omdat er dan nog mogelijkheden leken om de brand te blussen. Tien jaar na Parijs is er veel minder optimisme. Bij twee graden opwarming worden bijna alle kantelpunten in de biosfeer overschreden – met een verdere versnelling van klimaatopwarming tot gevolg. Daarom zitten we nog steeds op het pad dat de aarde ergens halverwege deze eeuw al de drie graden opwarming bereikt, met rampzalige gevolgen. Met de toenemende uitstoot van broeikasgassen neemt ook de uitstoot toe van andere vervuiling: zoals stikstof, plastics en niet-afbreekbare chemicaliën. Hierdoor neemt het weerstandsvermogen van alles wat leeft af. PFAS-achtige stoffen zitten niet alleen in wormen maar ook in moedermelk. Ultrafijn stof dringt door op celniveau. Glyfosaat verstoort ook schimmels en bacteriën in darmflora. Ook hier is snel ingrijpen van levensbelang. Ook hier falen regeringen wereldwijd. Duidelijk is dat onze democratisch gekozen leiders het tij niet zullen keren. Het huidige democratische systeem is namelijk vooral gericht op korte termijn (electorale) belangen en het bedienen van het grootkapitaal en de eigen achterban. Politici en ambtenaren doen dit vaak om later zelf goedbetaalde banen bij lobbygroepen of bedrijven te krijgen. Het voorzorgsbeginsel is volledig uit het beleid verdwenen, gezondheid van de natuur speelt nauwelijks een rol en over sociale, intergenerationele en internationale rechtvaardigheid gaat het al helemaal niet. Willen we het leven op aarde redden, dan moeten we eerst de democratie weer laten werken. XR eist niet voor niets ‘Burgers Beslissen’. Daarvoor hebben we jullie hulp nodig! We willen dat zoveel mogelijk mensen meedoen om politici duidelijk te maken dat ze hun werk moeten gaan doen: zorgen voor een goed leven voor mens en natuur, nu en in de toekomst. Daar moeten we andere, sterkere democratische vormen voor gebruiken waar gezond verstand en algemene belangen overheersen. Het Taiwanese tech-wonder Audrey Tang is er de afgelopen tien jaar in geslaagd de democratie in Taiwan te versterken. Eerst van buiten de overheid en vervolgens van binnenuit als de eerste Digitale Minister van Taiwan. Met behulp van AI bij digitale burgerberaden heeft ze zelfs bijgedragen aan het terugdringen van de polarisatie onder de Taiwanese bevolking tot het laagste niveau van alle OESO-landen. Haar missie wordt uitgevoerd met ultieme transparantie, integriteit, ‘actief luisteren’ en bijzondere aandacht voor essentiële details, terwijl ze ernaar streeft de maatschappelijke betrokkenheid te vergroten. Ze pakt daarbij ook grote problemen aan, zoals desinformatie, polarisatie en wantrouwen jegens de overheid, met helderheid en creativiteit. Meer op Spotify of YouTube! Lichtpuntje!
Gelukkig zijn er zo nu en dan ook in Nederland lichtpuntjes. Het verbod op het maken van fossiele reclame in Den Haag blijft namelijk in stand! Dat blijkt uit een uitspraak in een kort geding van de rechtbank Den Haag. En dit zet de deur open om ook in andere plaatsen voor zo’n verbod te gaan lobbyen. In deze LinkedIn-post staan voldoende argumenten om dat te doen Vraag partijen in jouw gemeente dus ook om zo’n verbod voor te stellen! (Ga naar de website van de gemeente, zoek een progressief raadslid dat met de openbare ruimte of gezondheid bezig is, stuur een mail met het verzoek om ook in jouw gemeente een fossiel reclameverbod in te stellen, zet de link naar de uitspraak erbij. Of spreek in bij de gemeente en bepleit een fossiel reclameverbod.) NOS, wees eerlijk!
Op zaterdag 31 mei bezetten we het Hilversumse mediapark voor het NOS-kantoor. Wij eisen dat NOS zijn verantwoordelijkheid neemt met eerlijke verslaggeving zonder misleidende frames, zonder nepneutraliteit en zonder valse balans. Nederland verdient eerlijke verslaggeving, inclusief een wekelijks klimaatjournaal waarin klimaatrechtvaardigheid centraal staat.
Extinction Rebellion staat voor persvrijheid. Of het nu over de klimaat- en ecologische crisis gaat of over de genocide in Gaza, we hebben pers nodig die zich niet laat leiden door de belangen van overheden en grote bedrijven, maar onverschrokken de waarheid vertelt. Daarom eisen wij dat NOS, de publieke omroep waar wij allemaal belasting voor betalen, zijn verantwoordelijkheid neemt. De actie op 31 mei is het begin van een nieuwe campagne. Radicaal-rechtse partijen die ons kabinet domineren zaaien verdeeldheid, bedreigen onze rechten en blokkeren elke serieuze aanpak van de klimaatcrisis. Terwijl de aarde verder opwarmt, weigeren zij keuzes te maken en gijzelen ze het debat met haat en leugens. Zo wordt onze toekomst verkwanseld, worden de rijken steeds rijker, en gaat vervuiling door! Grote vervuilers, die juist zouden moeten betalen voor de schade die zij veroorzaken, worden ondertussen nog steeds in de watten gelegd door dit kabinet. 
Wij willen een eerlijke en leefbare toekomst – voor iedereen, niet alleen voor de (super)rijken. Een samenleving waarin zorg voor mens én natuur centraal staat. Maar dit kabinet kiest voor fossiel: nieuwe gaswinning en fossiele subsidies gaan door, terwijl hoognodige investeringen in isolatie van huizen, groene banen en betaalbaar openbaar vervoer uitblijven.
Daarom sluiten wij aan bij het De Straat Op-protest op 24 mei in Amsterdam. Tegen angst en haat, voor een solidaire samenleving. Omdat (internationale) klimaatrechtvaardigheid niet losstaat van sociale rechtvaardigheid. Omdat wij geloven in de kracht van mensen die samen opstaan.

Op zondag 11 mei is er weer een ‘Steentje voor steentje’-actie in het Westelijk Havengebied in Amsterdam. Steentje voor steentje is een initiatief van Kappen met Kolen tegen (bloed)kolen waarbij activisten (op klaarlichte dag en ruim van te voren aangekondigd) elk een of meerdere steentjes weghalen onder een stuk spoor waarover alleen kolentreinen rijden. Het doel is om het spoor ongeschikt te maken voor kolentransport en zo groter gevaar – het verbranden van kolen – te voorkomen.

In de vorige nieuwsbrief riepen we op tot steun tegen het wetsvoorstel Wet Transparantie Maatschappelijke Organisaties (Wtmo). Én we deelden de krachtige oproep van The Surge, om het verzet tegen fascisme, oorlog, genocide en klimaatchaos te steunen. De vele rebelse bijdragen die jullie als reactie stuurden, waren hartverwarmend en bemoedigend! Dank jullie wel!
Deze collectieve inzet laat zien tot hoeveel we in staat zijn als we samenkomen. Het brengt een kracht teweeg die onder de oppervlakte van elke actie stroomt: de onoverwinnelijke kracht van toewijding en geloof. Dankzij die kracht hebben wij de afgelopen maanden flink kunnen actievoeren! Een aantal voorbeelden van wat we met jullie donaties hebben kunnen doen in de afgelopen maand: - Juridische bijstand voor rebellen die slachtoffer zijn geworden van verkeersagressie. Tijdens een A12-actie in juli vorig jaar zijn een aantal rebellen bedreigd en aangereden. Binnenkort moet de bestuurder voor de rechter verschijnen. Om onze rebellen professioneel bij te staan en een duidelijk signaal af te geven dat geweld tegen vreedzaam protest niet wordt getolereerd, laten we hen bijstaan door een advocaat. De geraamde kosten hiervoor bedragen ongeveer € 1.900,-.
- Voorbereiding van de nieuwe campagne ‘NOS, wees eerlijk’. Voor deze grote campagne, die is gericht op eerlijke en volledige berichtgeving over de klimaat- en ecologische crisis, zijn we bezig met een spectaculaire actie op het mediapark eind mei. Denk aan kosten voor 100 paarse overalls, een grote banner, flyers, infoborden, rookfakkels en klimuitrusting. Totale kosten: € 5.800,-.
- Stilte doorbreken tijdens de aandeelhoudersvergadering van ING. Een kleine groep rebellen verstoorde op Earth Day de vergadering om ING’s destructieve investeringen aan de kaak te stellen. Om binnen te komen, moesten zij aandelen kopen. In totaal hebben wij 450 aandelen x € 20,- per aandeel aangeschaft om de vergadering te kunnen verstoren en van ING te eisen dat ze stopt met het financieren van bedrijven die nog nieuwe olie- en gasbedrijven starten. De aandelen werden natuurlijk na de vergadering direct verkocht! Voor wie dat niet zelf kon bekostigen, werden de kosten deels voorgeschoten door de stichting. Totaal voorschot: maximaal € 9.000,-.
Dit is slechts een greep uit wat jullie allemaal mogelijk maken met jullie bijdragen. XR blijft groeien in kracht, creativiteit en bereik. Dat is de kracht van een enorme groep burgers die samen opkomen voor een leefbare en rechtvaardige planeet, en voor een wereld waarin protest niet wordt ingeperkt maar gehoord.

Dear Radio, Our beloved home is on fire.
And around the world, governments are failing to put out the flames. Global greenhouse gas emissions must be halved within six years if we are to stay below two degrees of warming. In Paris, back in 2015, two degrees was labelled as “not yet catastrophic” — because there still seemed to be a chance to control the fire. Ten years later, that optimism has largely vanished. At two degrees, we are expected to cross nearly all major tipping points in the biosphere — accelerating climate breakdown even further. That’s why we are still on track to hit three degrees of warming by the middle of this century — with devastating consequences. As emissions rise, so does all other pollution: nitrogen, plastics, and toxic “forever chemicals.” The resilience of life itself is breaking down. PFAS-like substances are now found not just in worms, but in human breast milk. Ultrafine particles penetrate cells. Glyphosate disrupts gut flora, fungi, and bacteria. Here too, governments are failing — and rapid action is a matter of life and death. It’s now painfully clear that our elected leaders won’t change course. Our current democratic systems are primarily focused on short-term (electoral) gains, serving big money and political allies. Politicians and civil servants often use their positions to secure lucrative jobs in lobbying groups or corporations. The precautionary principle has vanished from policy. Nature’s health barely factors into decisions. And the ideas of social, intergenerational, and global justice? They’re not even on the table. If we want to save life on Earth, we must first make democracy work again. That’s why XR demands: Beyond Politics: Let People Decide.
We need your help to make that happen. We’re building a movement to push politicians to do their job: to ensure a livable future for people and planet alike. To do this, we must use new, stronger democratic forms — ones that put common sense and the public good first.

Taiwanese tech wonder, Audrey Tang, has managed to revolutionize democracy in Taiwan in the past 10 years. First from outside the government and then from within, using AI and digital people’s assemblies she has even helped to reduce the level of polarity in the population to the lowest of all OECD countries. Her mission is carried out with penultimate transparency, integrity, ‘active listening’ and care for vital details while aiming to wildly increase civic engagement. Fortunately, there are still some bright spots — even here in the Netherlands. The ban on fossil advertising in The Hague will remain in place! This was confirmed by a recent ruling in a preliminary injunction by the District Court of The Hague.
This opens the door to push for similar bans in other cities and towns. This LinkedIn post offers plenty of arguments to support such a move. So: ask political parties in your municipality to propose a similar ban!
Visit your municipal website, look for a progressive council member working on public space or health, and send them an email asking to implement a local fossil ad ban — include a link to the court ruling. Or speak at a council meeting and make the case for a fossil advertising ban yourself. NOS, Tell The Truth!
On Saturday 31 May from 12.00, we will occupy the Hilversum media park in front of the NOS office.
Our demands: stop misleading frames, stop fake neutrality, stop false balance. The Netherlands deserves honest reporting, including a weekly climate news that focuses on climate justice.

Far-right parties dominating our government are sowing division, threatening our rights, and blocking any serious response to the climate crisis. While the planet continues to heat up, they refuse to make the necessary choices and hijack the debate with hate and lies. Our future is being sold off, the rich are getting richer, and the pollution continues unchecked. Meanwhile, major polluters—who should be paying for the damage they cause—are still being pampered by this government.
We demand a just and livable future—for everyone, not just the (super)rich. A society where care for both people and planet comes first. But this cabinet sides with fossil fuels: new gas extraction and fossil fuel subsidies continue, while essential investments in home insulation, green jobs, and affordable public transport are being ignored.
That’s why we’re joining the “De Straat Op” protest on May 24th in Amsterdam. Against fear and hatred, for a society built on solidarity. Because climate justice cannot be separated from social justice. Because we believe in the power of people rising up together.

On Sunday, May 11, there will be another ‘Steentje voor steentje’ (Stone by stone) action in the Westelijk Havengebied in Amsterdam. Steentje voor steentje is an initiative of ‘Kappen met Kolen’ against the use of coals in which activists (in broad daylight and announced well in advance) each remove one or more pebbles under a stretch of track over which only coal trains pass. The goal is to make the track unsuitable for coal transport and thus prevent greater danger – the burning of coal.

In the last newsletter, we called for support against the WTMO (Transparency of Social Organizations Act) bill. AND we shared the powerful call of The Surge, to support resistance to fascism, war, genocide and climate chaos. The many rebellious contributions you sent in response were heartwarming and encouraging! Thank you!
This collective effort shows how much we are capable of when we come together. It brings about a force that flows beneath the surface of every action: the invincible power of dedication and faith. Thanks to that power, we have been able to take action in a big way over the past few months! Some examples of what we have been able to do with your donations over the past month: - Legal assistance for rebels victimized by traffic aggression. During an A12 action last July, a number of rebels were threatened and hit. Soon the driver will have to appear in court. To professionally assist our rebels and send a clear message that violence against peaceful protest will not be tolerated, we are having a lawyer assist them. The estimated cost for this is approximately € 1,900,-.
- Preparation of the new campaign ‘NOS, be fair’. For this major campaign, aimed at honest and complete reporting on the climate and ecological crisis, we are preparing a spectacular action at the Media Park at the end of May. Think costs for 100 purple overalls, a big banner, flyers, info signs, smoke torches and climbing equipment. Total cost: € 5,800,-.
- Breaking silence at ING’s shareholder meeting. On Earth Day a small group of rebels disrupted the meeting to denounce ING’s destructive investments. To get in, they had to buy shares. We purchased a total of 450 shares x € 20,- per share to disrupt the meeting and demand that ING stop funding companies that are still starting new oil and gas businesses. The shares were of course sold immediately after the meeting! For those who could not afford it themselves, the costs were partially advanced by the foundation. Total advance: up to € 9,000,-.
